Definition: Physical bullying occurs when a person uses overt bodily actions to gain power over peers. Physical bullying can include kicking, punching, hitting, or other physical attacks. Unlike other kinds of bullying in school, physical bullying is easy to identify because the acts are so obvious. Physical bullies tend to demonstrate high levels of aggression from a young age.

Physical bullying is one of the most dangerous types of bullying and sometimes one of the least worried about. Physical bullying cannot only kill people, but  force or promote suicide. Most teenagers will not report physical bullying, especially boys, for various reasons, one of the top reasons would be pride or fear.

Boys are afraid to seem weak, or in-superior to others, because they prefer to be dominant. Girls sometime have this problem too, but not as often as boys.

Physical bullying occurs mostly at school, but can happen anywhere. Middle school is the most common age for physical bullying to start. This is most likely because middle school students are starting to grow and want more to fit in with their peers, those who don't fit in are more likely to become victims.

There are many types of negative physical interactions that can occur between young people, including fighting, practical jokes, stealing, and sexual harassment. These things are not considered physical bullying unless:

  • The same victim is targeted repeatedly
  • The bully or bullies intend to hurt, embarrass, or intimidate the victim
  • The actions occur in a situation with a real or perceived imbalance of power, such as when the bully is stronger than the victim or has a higher social standing
