Unfashionably Mean

"Sticks and stones may break my bones,

but words can kill my soul."

Definition: Verbal bullying occurs when someone uses his/her language to gain power over his or her peers. The verbal bully makes use of relentless insults and teasing to bully his/her peers.

Verbal bullies are one of the more difficult types to identify since their attacks are usually when adults or parents are not present. Even though verbal bullying creates no physical damage, this type of abuse can have long lasting psychological impacts on victims.

Words are powerful. They can make you feel better when your sad and they come from a close friend, or they can make you feel miserable when they come from an enemy who is attempting to make you feel bad.

The phrase "Sticks and stones my break my bones but words will never hurt me." is horribly wrong. Verbal bullying causes psychological problems that may become too serious and possibly be brought to counseling, but sometimes after the damage is too deep, the scars remain regardless.

The act of verbal bullying is used to cut the victim down in social status and make them feel inferior to the bully so the bully then gains power and "respect" from their peers.

Sometimes groups of kids come together to pick on one person in particular in order to cut them down by using numbers against their social status.

Verbal bullying can happen anywhere at anytime. It can cause people to lose friends, or become anti social very quickly. It also has been known to cause trust issues among friends.
